Certain family members of Serious accidents occur on highways and interstates. This is mostly due to the high speeds on these roadways—i.e., 60 mph or 70 mph. There is little margin for error at these increased speeds. Other factors that contribute to accidents on Louisiana highways and interstates include:

  • Lack of street lights
  • Wild animals entering the roadway (e.g., deer)
  • Sleep deprivation and driver fatigue
  • Crosswinds (mainly on interstate bridges)
  • Vehicles following too closely
  • Intoxicated drivers
  • Driver distraction (e.g., texting and loud music)
  • Tire blowouts
  • Poor weather conditions (e.g., rain and fog)

Tips for Avoiding Interstate and Highway Accidents

The best tip to avoid rear-end accidents on interstates and highways is to follow the Three Second Rule. To follow this rule, the rear driver should pick an object in front of the vehicle he or she is following. The car in the front and the car in the rear should pass the object no less than three (3) seconds apart. If road or weather conditions are poor, the number of seconds should be increased. Other tips to avoid highway and interstate collisions include:

  • Keep both hands on the steering wheel
  • Illuminate headlights and high beams (including fog lights) when appropriate
  • Keep driver distraction to a minimum
  • No texting while driving
  • Check vehicle blind spots before merging lanes
  • Drive within the speed limit
  • Wear corrective lenses when necessary
  • Drive defensively
If all drivers exercise common sense and utilize the above tips, there will be less accidents. Louisiana roadways will be safer!
