What To Do When There Is No Speed Limit Posted In Jefferson Parish

If you have ever driven on a street in Jefferson Parish without a speed limit sign, you may have wondered how fast you should travel. The answer can be found in the Jefferson Parish Code of Ordinances. Section 36-48 states:

It shall be unlawful for the driver of any vehicle to exceed the speed limit of twenty (20) miles per hour upon any of the streets of the parish unless otherwise posted.

This means that the default speed limit when no signs indicate otherwise is 20 mph. So be observant out there: If there is no speed limit sign, you should probably slow down. This ordinance governs all cities and towns in Jefferson Parish including, Avondale, Barataria, Bridge City, Crown Point, Grand Isle, Gretna, Harvey, Harahan, Jefferson, Kenner, Lafitte, Marrero, Metairie, New Orleans (70121, 70123), Nine Mile Point, River Ridge, Terrytown, Village of Jean Lafitte, Waggaman, and Westwego.
